First Annual Lemonade Day in San Antonio, TX

Last summer, while visiting my sister in Houston, I vividly remember reading a front-page story that made me so excited!  It was about Lemonade Day, sponsored by Prepared4Life.org (P4L), a program the entire city of Houston supports that encourages kids to become young entrepreneurs, from kindergarten through the 12th grade, by teaching the fundamentals of business and financial planning.

Lemonade Day is a citywide program designed to teach children how to start, own and operate their own lemonade business.2010 lemonade day san antonio prepared 4 life organization

My daughter, imaginative and resourceful, has always wanted her own lemonade stand.  This program not only gives kids (many from high-risk neighborhoods) the opportunity to have a stand of their own, but empowers them with important planning information to maximize their potential for success.

It provides an opportunity for families, businesses, faith-based community organizations and schools to come together for a common purpose – to train the next generation of entrepreneurs through a free, fun, engaging, experiential activity.

Prepared 4 Life Lemonade Day San Antonio, TX

When:  May 2, 2010 | First Sunday in May

Background Information

Originally started in Houston by Michael Holthouse (the founder of P4L) a master entrepreneur himself.  After creating a company that surpassed the $100 million mark, 6 years after starting it from scratch (Paranet),  Holthouse created:

He created the Holthouse Foundation for Kids to help at-risk children acquire the skills and habits they need to become successful adults…He and his wife, Lisa, later founded Prepared 4 Life, a non-profit organization that started by offering after-school programs for at-risk middle-school children in Houston.

He got the idea from his daughter who woke up early in the morning, excited to start her own lemonade stand.  Together they put together a business plan taking into consideration marketing, location, and paying back her investors and from the ashes Lemonade Day was born:

The ideas was to give kids an engaging workbook that would guide them through the process of setting up a stand.  An adult member would help walk each child through the process, but would be asked to leave most of the problem-solving to the kids…It would teach young kids the nuts and bolts of entrepreneurial startups: setting goals, planning for success, securing a loan, choosing locations, procuring supplies, making their product, and turning a profit.

San Antonio TX Lemonade Day's Backpack Pickup Locations

Every Lemonade Day participant picks up a bag at a local station that includes a workbook for the kids and another one for the parents.

Although the kids are allowed to keep all of their profits, their encouraged to not only pay back their investors, they also are encouraged to donate a portion of their profits to a charity of their choice.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie | Laura Numeroff

I got home from work and needed to relax so I decided to see what my tweeps were talking about on Twitter. I was going through the tweets when I saw one from @JoshGroban asking:

If I’m not familiar with the series, should I begin with If You Give A Mouse A Cookie or If You Give A Moose A Muffin?

And so of course, anyone familiar with Laura Numeroff‘s beloved books, illustrated by Felicia Bond, which started in 1985, would know that you have to start with “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”. So I tweeted back to @JoshGroban (just to let him know, along with his many other followers) and decided to write a blog post about what a great children’s book series it is…

If You Give a… Book Series

After deciding to write about it, I realized that it would be great to include information about the author so I googled “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” and found a link to the publishers website for each book at Harper Collins (link to If You Give… series).  Of course I knew that I couldn’t write a blog post without looking at each of the following books:

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

Includes a link to an audio excerpt, the critic’s corner, and a link to the books’ official website: MouseCookieBooks.com.

Help Pig find her way to a pile of pancakes with this printable activity…when you’re done with that, help Pig look for hidden words with this activity.

If You Give a Cat a Cupcake

This cool Cat comes with a complete activity kit filled with many different printables, If You Give a Cat a Cupcake stickers, and a coloring sheet.

More information from the publisher about If You Give a Pig a Party

And if you decide to throw a pig a party, you might want to have printable activities to pass out to your guests:

  • Pick the Correct Pig sheet
  • Pig Party Event Kit filled with activities and suggestions.

More information from the publisher about If You Take a Mouse to the Movies

More information from the publisher about If You Take a Mouse to School

Online Games

Once I made sure I had read all of the books, I wanted to see the If You Give… books official website.

You can play a matching game that starts off more easily with Mouse’s Little Matching Game but you can work yourself up to a bigger challenge with Pig or Moose.

After matching, you can play more education games, Mouse’s Counting Game, Pig’s Letter Game, and Moose’s Shape Game.

If you’re like me and the Cat with the Cupcake rocks your world the most, you might want to play the If You Give a Cat a Cupcake Game in order to win a very special recipe!

Teacher Resources

And if your getting you child ready for school, you’re going to want to check out this interview with the author and book activity which is not only fun but a great way to get your kids excited about school.

And if you want to get your child excited for school, you might want to help their teacher discover these incredible fun resources like this classroom activity guide for teachers which includes fun lesson plans for many different school subjects. And if you’re already doing a lesson plan on the books, you might want specific worksheets like this specifically for If You Give a Cat a Cupcake book.

And if you have already spent all of this time writing a blog post, you’re going to want to see what’s been happening on Twitter. And if you check your tweeps’ tweets, you might get the idea for another blog post.

Valentine’s Day Printable Activities and Crafts for Kids

While I was finishing my last post on Valentine’s Day sales and promotions I was already mentally writing this one.  With Valentine’s Day only slightly more than two weeks away, I figured I better hurry up and find some great children activities for the holiday we love to love.

I assumed my favorite children’s websites for printable activities would have special crafts online, available to download.  I was right! In no particular order here are some fun activities for children and other thoughtful resources for parents.

PBS Parents Valentine's Day Resources printable valentine's day kids crafts

PBS Parents offer lots of ideas to get you in the holiday spirit.  For parents are several links to various articles and resources about feelings, diversity, and other characteristics that are perfect to teach around this time through books and games, as well as recipes to share with your family.

PBS Kids Valentine's Day Resources and online games

PBS Kids includes printable activities, coloring pages, and e-cards of all your favorite, educational friends.  It also lists information about special programming on February 13th with the heart-filled theme.

Martha Stewart Valentine's Day Resources and crafts printable valentines crafts

Depending on how ambitious you’re feeling, check out Martha Stewart’s website for kids activities.  (Here for more adult sized activities…not that adult… ;-P)  Includes everything from cards, cute packaging, candies, and soap!  Very cute and surprisingly easy to put together.  Be prepared for printing the templates…I made several of them successfully. Some I gave up.

Here are four of the 27 Valentine’s Day crafts

Index for all Martha Stewart activities online for Valentine’s.

nick jr valentine's day activities and online games

Nick Jr’s Valentine’s also jumped on the Valentine’s Day bandwagon with their dedicated site too.  The front page is an advent calendar that your child can return each day to click different dates for a fun surprise to open.  Grouped by week, view previous weeks and come back each week to unlock more.  My daughter’s favorite, Olivia, remains to be unlocked!

Check out the resources for parents here too.  Or let Max and Ruby help you plan a classroom party or soiree for friends.

All Valentine’s Day printable activities for many different ages…I have always been very impressed with Nick Jr.’s printable activities…they’re definitely a step higher than most.  I hate the ones that only offer coloring pages, my daughter doesn’t stay entertained with coloring but crafts will keep her busy for hours!

Xtreme Kleen | Product Review

Let me say it’s a good thing I don’t get cable and am not tempted to be sucked into “As Seen On TV” commercials!

Even though there are signs all around my neighborhood, No Solicitors, my doorbell almost always rings for no other reason but someone peddling their goods.  Unfortunately I always listen to their spiel and get sucked in.  Normally I can be very good about saying no but in case you meet the same fate as I did against the incredible convincing and persistent Xtreme Kleen sales person (who cleaned the rim on my car, an oil stain in the driveway, a portion of my stove, the grout between some tile , a stain on the carpet, and ink on the wall…), here’s everything you’ll want t know about the product.

Website: http://xccinc.com/

The official website is listed below.  I used that same address to track them down in the Better Business Bureau…to find out just how legit they were.  I breathed a HUGE sign of relief to find out they got a B, even after 14 complaints being filed in the past 36 months…they had all be resolved.  The website also gives you 3 days to return for a full-money back refund if you’re unsatisfied with your miracle product.  You can also buy some for yourself from the website (I definitely did NOT get this product for free or at a discounted rate so I have no emotional connection to it…)

You get a large gallon jug, a brush with iron bristles and a flip side with soft bristles, 2 steel wood type pads, and a spray bottle with lines for easy ratio measurements.  Basically ratios are some part Xtreme Cleen product and other part water…I bought 3 different colored spray bottles from Ikea and put different ratios in each.  That way I only use the measurement bottle for measurements and don’t need to worry about switching out concentration levels each time I move to another area of the house.

The website also lists the ratios in case you lose the brochure or forget what your options are.

If you have questions you can also contact the company.

Oh, and before I forget, here’s what it can’t do:

It is not recommended for use on silk, satin, suede, low grade latex wall paint or any other surface / fabric not designed to get wet.

I have included some pictures below but am so far impressed on the product’s ability to deliver…I was able to clean my oven and stove fairly quickly, get an ink mark off the wall by myself (not surprised when the sales person can do it…), and most impressively so far…the ability to clean OLD stains on my carpet!  I’m curious to find out others’ experiences, let me know and leave me a comment!

Active Ingredient: 2-Butoxyethanol a.k.a. Butyl Cellosolve is referenced in the website’s “Material Data Safety Sheet“:

organic solvent …colorless…main uses include solvent in paint and cleaning supplies…other uses include firefighting foam, oil spill dispersant, whiteboard cleaners, and herbicides…

Apparently it really does do it all!  Although my sales person said it was non-toxic (demonstrated by a quick taste test…) I don’t think I would chug it if I were you…but you don’t have to take my word for it.  :)

Xtreme Kleen:

Xtreme Kleen: Simple to Klean

Xtreme Kleen:

Before: The Stove (not mine...)

Xtreme Kleen:

After: The Stove (simply sprayed and let soak for 5 minutes...rubbed off w/ abrasive sponge)

Xtreme Kleen:

Before: Not pretty when sauce bubbles over...

Xtreme Kleen:

After: Now it is! (Ratio was 10:1)

Xtreme Kleen:

Before: The Oven (rarely deep-cleaned for past 3 years)

Xtreme Kleen:

After: The Oven (sprayed w/ ratio 10:1, let sit for 15 minutes, warmed oven...)

Xtreme Kleen:

Before: Carpet w/ gum rubbed in, a year later...

Xtreme Kleen:

After: The carpet after letting ration 5:1 soak for 5 minutes and rubbing with a soft-bristle brush.

Xtreme Kleen:

Before: The carpet with a longtime soy sauce stain...

Xtreme Kleen:

During: Letting Xtreme Kleen soak for a couple minutes...

Xtreme Kleen:

After: No more soy sauce! After rubbing vigorously for a couple moments, gone!

Xtreme Kleen:

Before: The carpet with sticky residue from a red candy...

Xtreme Kleen:

During: Letting Xtreme Kleen soak and already red has disappeared.

Xtreme Kleen:

After: The carpet is red free! :D Rubbed with brush for good measure...

All in all, I’m happy I didn’t get ripped off and am pretty sure my supply will last me a good amount of time, letting me get my money’s worth. :D

Welcome to San Antonio Groupon!

Groupon I Heart Groupon Badge

As a lover of Woot and everything on sale, I was very excited about the local launch of San Antonio’s Groupon!  I have included everything I have discovered so far that I’m excited and why I chose Groupon.com as my newest Website of the Week!

Groupon is just a little over a year old (according to their About Me) by @AndrewMason (music major turned software developer turn who founded The Point.)   Basically there is a new deal each day and a certain number of Groupon groupies need to grab that deal  before anyone can actually purchase it.  If you don’t get enough people for the daily deal then you don’t have to pay.  The downside…you don’t get the deal!  It’s an interesting concept, on day one of San Antonio Groupon’s launch, Groupon required 20 buys and right now they’re at 269!

Daily Deal: Each daily deal includes a link to the retailer/restaurant, information, and also what the local critics are saying!  It also counts down the time left to purchase, what time the designated number was met, and how many people have purchased that day’s Groupon.  You can also comment on that days deal…which might tip the indecisive if you put in a good word.

Refer Friends: Refer friends through Facebook, Twitter, email, and your personalized link so that you get the $10 credit whenever your friends make their first purchase!

Alerts:  Groupon also makes it easy to subscribe to daily alerts!  Find them on Facebook, Twitter, and their RSS feed!  They also frequently make blog posts, tweets, and Facebook updates.  You can keep up with the main company of check out your local Groupon like I did!  Also check back to see what you foolishly missed on their Recent Deals page to see the (DUH) most recent…click here to see all

San Antonio Groupon

Groupon Gifts: Looking for a Christmas present?  Give the gift of the daily deal (HUGE button found on the main page) OR Groupon Bucks.  The Bucks can be redeemed at ANY Groupon, whenever they find something they like.  Although you can only buy 1 Groupon for yourself a day, you can purchase an unlimited number for friends!

Business: Want to get your business on Groupon?  Find out how here.  Includes more information about the company, how it works, and the encouraging success stories that contributed to over a 1.8+ million subscribers current registered!  Check out what the press is saying about Groupon.

Suggestions: Looking for a particular business but don’t see it yet?!  Suggest it here!  Groupon has multiple opportunities for your voice to be heard!

For Hire: Looking for a job?  Groupons always hiring too… centered in Chicago there are opportunities in Sales, IT, programming, SEO…sounds like a pretty fun place to work!

Make sure you read the FAQ for more information, things that caught my eye:

  • The last referral you clicked on before making a purchase gets the $10 friend referral credit!

With almost 48 local cities listed, Groupons is EVERYWHERE!

Mix 96.1′s Not So Silent Night 2009

UPDATED (12/15/2009):  Parking Information

The Institute of Texan Cultures suggested parking at the city lot on Durango which doesn’t close.  It’s Tower & ITC parking. Last they heard, $8.

Also, the Downtown Alliance San Antonio’s Twitter group @BeDowntown suggested the 2 parking lots near La Villita, 1 block away. Enter Park + Central Parking found on their handy map.

Finally my tweep, @RachelKeller (of renowned catering company @theRKgroup) saw event parking on the grass “Event Day Only” by Refugio Place apartments!

WoW: Online Gaming Gives Back

Website of the Week: http://www.gamesthatgive.net

Games that Give is a website I recently found through UNICEF USA’s Facebook updates…it takes advantage of the money made from advertising online while people play games online and gives 70% of the revenues back to the 14 organizations it currently supports!

Hover over images to read a quick summary of each organization, click on the image for more information:

The website launched in August 2008 and also has a corresponding Facebook app!  The more you play online (and the better you do), the more you make for the charity of your choice!

All you have to do is sign up for a new user account, select your favorite charity, and start playing one of the currently 12 games available!  I love the interface, simple, sharp, and the game selection is ideal.  You’re going to be playing blackjack, solitaire, and some of the other popular games on your computer anyways – play AND give back to the community!

If you want to know more details check out their blog or their extensive FAQ section.  Learn more details about how they got started, who their most recent corporate sponsors are, and other questions you might have!

Once registered with the site, easily send out notifications to your email contacts, also encouraging them to play!  Right now my chosen charity is UNICEF USA and it tells me how many immunizations my online game time has bought for kids in need!

Finally, another fun feature of the gaming site, there’s even a “Click if the Boss is Coming” button that automatically pops up an image of a word document!  (Love those buttons!)  Play incognito to support the cause!

Tasty Bytes: Yard House San Antonio

Name: Yard House

Where: 15900 La Cantera Parkway, San Antonio TX  78256 (Get directions here.)

Did you know? The name yard house pays homage to the 3-foot tall English glass, originally created for passing to stage coach drivers easily, during more relaxed alcohol consumption days.  (There is approximately 32 ounces in a yard house including those glasses offered at all Yard House locations.)

Quick Bit: Opened for only a week, the first Yard House in Texas did not disappoint!  My friend and I enjoyed an incredibly indulgent Sunday afternoon meal at The Shops at La Cantera’s newest eatery addition.  The sun streamed demurely through the windows, offering a full-scale view we did not ascertain during a late-night reconnaissance visit the previous Friday.  As one of the first lunchtime patrons (day-lights savings has no affect on the discerning palate), I was struck by the intimate openness of the spacious restaurant, the dramatic artwork on the walls (details to follow), and the numerous flat screens patiently waiting for NFL Sunday (and yes, sports fans, they do have NFL Sunday Ticket.)

Geekette Bit’s Tasty Byte Highlight

While reviewing the extensive menu, my dining companion and I immediately struggled to select a rational and reasonable number of tantalizing appetizer specialties from the 20-plus offered on our local menu.  We were not disappointed with the crisp, solid Blue Crab Cakes happily dancing with the lightest mango papaya chutney, passion fruit beurre blanc, and tomato oil.  Dipped individually, the crab cakes spawned 3 distinct tastes, joined revealed its perfect complements.  For our starter course we also ordered the behemoth Hawaiian Poke Stake which included generous layers of fresh, hearty ahi tuna, crunchy wontons, and ginger mix of julienned carrots and bean sprouts medley.  The avocado accompaniment politely subdued the strong ginger crescendo without diminishing the dish’s richness.

The half pound avocado and Swiss burger my friend ordered was served in the good company of a slender French fries and a tasty pickle which I thought was pleasantly attentive to a somewhat minor detail!)  He was also offered the choice between a potato or wheat bun.  I did not need the charming wooden stake to know my 12 oz. full flavor grilled rib eye was a perfect medium, my butter rose melting quickly.  The garlic mashed potatoes, full of texture and adorned with a sprig of rosemary, quietly outperformed the green beans that packed a solid crunch but almost under-delivered on flavor.  The colossal shrimp impaled with a thick lemon grass skewer were beautifully grilled and seasoned.

Our meal concluded with a light mini chocolate soufflé, the perfect portion, coupled with vanilla ice crème.  Served warm, both immediately melted fondly in my mouth.

Throughout the meal, our server Casey treated us as if we were her only (and favorite!) customers – gregarious, patient, and charming, a wonderful host who only enhanced our meal.

Halloween Tailgating

There are a lot of fun events going on before Halloween even gets here!  Don’t wait until the end of the month; check your newspaper for local events!

1 – Bass Pro Shop! You heard me right!  I have been more and more impressed with the activities offered here!  Oct. 24/25 and Oct. 30/31, get there early and stay for different crafts and activities offered throughout the day and store!  Make a leather craft, rope a bronco, partake in kid costume parades, paint a craft pumpkin, roast marshmallows, and lots of other GREAT events!

3 – Pumpkin Patches! This was one of my favorite October traditions!  Find a local pumpkin patch, maybe as cool as this oneSouth Texas Maize!  Right outside of San Antonio, TX…it even has a corn maze (one kid friendly and one more difficult!)  Help you kids select their own pumpkins, snack on fall snacks, take a hayride, and automatically have the picture backdrop for Halloween pictures.

I’ll also continue to update this post as I find more family friendly events as well!  Check back for that and my next post on alternatives to trick or treating or ways to spice it up!
