SmashBurger | San Antonio, TX

In the mood for a juicy hamburger or crisp veggies?! Smashburger is definitely the place for you to enjoy with your family! After being invited to a preview when they opened their Bandera/1604 San Antonio, TX location, I was immediately impressed to find out that their founder comes to most if not all their grand openings, all over the country!

“A place where you can get a 1/3 or 1/2 pound burger with one of our great recipes or you can create your own. A place that is close to home and affordable. Where the energy is comfortable and relaxed. Where the food is served to you quickly and on a plate – not in a bag. — smashburger is the better way.”

Another thing to note, each Smashburger features regional menu based on what is locally popular! In San Antonio you’ll definitely want to check out their

We enjoyed an intimate dinner with two other wonderful couples who only helped enhanced a great atmosphere. We were able to walk in without reservations on a Saturday evening, slightly before 8pm but it quickly got packed.

Everything was fabulous and you definitely want to save room for dessert. The Panna Cotta was incredibly refreshing. I would go back simply for it. All of the appetizers and entrees were delicious. I had the duck served two ways and was left incredibly satisfied.

Hurry in! Definitely a wonderful place for a date night, celebration, or place to avoid rush hour traffic if you’re passing by the Quarry.

The Grill at Leon Springs | Boerne Stage Road

As a big believer in comfort food, I highly recommend enjoying a wonderful meal and great atmosphere found at The Grill at Leon Springs, right off I-10 and Boerne Stage Road (if you walk into a Rudy’s BBQ you’ve gone too far…)

I have been coming to this restaurant for a long time so I was surprised that I had not blogged about it. The first time I ate there I had incredible oysters and grilled lamb chops. Another time I came for their Sunday brunch and enjoyed a wonderfully European-inspired menu of assorted breakfast, lunch, and dinner choices. The ambiance and decorations are intimate, modern, but comfortable. Little Christmas lights set a very romantic mood and private rooms are available for special celebrations. We brought in the new year one time with a group of 8 friends at the Grill so keep it in mind for special holidays as well!

I actually celebrated my high school graduation and several birthdays at the owners’ (Thierry Burkle with Armand Obadia) original restaurant, L’Etoile (now closed but was located off Broadway) and loved it as well.

Max’s Wine Dive | San Antonio, TX

I have been wanting to try Max’s Wine Dive since I first saw the great reviews (and pictures of their fried chicken!!!) pouring in! Thankfully Max’s Wine Dive in the Quarry is opened for lunch on Fridays so my friend and I made our way over. Right on the corner of the new Quarry Village, it was easy to find and park (we went during lunchtime; I could see parking becoming a premium…)

The restaurant’s décor can be described as a marriage between a chic, modern urbanite and a happy go lucky cowboy. There’s a jukebox, 150 different bottles of wine available, and a family-owned business feeling. While I no longer near the Quarry, I would go back just for Max’s Wine Dive.

Although I was emotionally prepared to start with the Salmon Ceviche w/ tomatoes, cucumbers, shallots, avocado, citrus vinaigrette, and MAX’s wonton chips, our waiter meekly announced the kitchen just prepared the last dish but recovered nicely w/ a recommendation to try the Pulled Pork Stuffed Peppers. The piquillo peppers were stuffed with the most juicy, tender pulled pork, and set on a healthy dollop of chipotle aioli and topped w/ a cilantro pesto.

I have been dreaming of the fried chicken since I saw a picture a couple months ago. Travel+Leisure named Max’s Wine Dive’s fried chicken on their 2010 America’s Best Fried Chicken and I don’t disagree. The chicken, three large pieces served w/ warm honey (yum!), fabulously seasoned and simmered collard greens, tasty and fluffy mashed potatoes, and two pieces of toast worth being called Texas was phenomenal. It was completely satisfying and will definitely be keeping Auden’s Kitchen (see their fried chicken here) on their toes. And though I was fearful anything soaked in jalapeño buttermilk for 24 to 36 hours would be too spicy for me, I didn’t struggle w/ the faint kick at all.

Below are pictures of our plates. We LOVED everything, and I cannot wait to go back w/ more people so I’m able to try an even larger selection.

My to-do list includes:

  • Nacho Mama’s Oysters (Crispy fried Gulf Coast oysters and garlic aioli on fried wontons with habanero salsa and cilantro)
  • The Fried Egg Sandwich (Pan-fried eggs drizzled with truffle oil, apple wood smoked bacon, Gruyere, green leaf lettuce, tomato, and garlic black truffle aioli sandwiched between two pieces of artisan levain bread and served with MAX?s chips)

Le Midi | San Antonio, TX

Celebrating a friends birthday and seeing West Side Story at the Majestic Theater, I finally had the long awaited chance to eat at Le Midi! Since we were seeing a show that started at 8pm we made sure to allow for enough time to eat, downtown restaurants get crowded quickly! We made 6pm reservations and were out of there a little before 730, leaving us plenty of time to walk across the street to the Majestic Theater and get our seats!

While making reservations, I let them know that we were celebrating my friends birthday. They discreetly brought out a lit candle with dessert which I thought was very nice and festive.

I took pictures of our food below, I enjoyed everything a lot! From 5-7pm while shows are playing, they have a 3 course theater menu, that day’s included a choice of a soup or salad, cornish hens or pork scallopine, and a flour less chocolate cake over strawberries for dessert!

I had the escargot and pommes frites for dipping in the fabulous garlic sauce…and my main entrée was the braised lamb shank, Moroccan style. Everything was fabulous, plan a little extra time, our meal did take some time in between course. I enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant and thought the food was traditional and satisfying.

They offered online reservations and several news worthy events!

Boardwalk on Bulverde | San Antonio, TX

I visited the Boardwalk on Bulverde (San Antonio’s first mobile food truck park!!) because of a Yelp sponsored event, earlier in the month. I am so glad I went! It was truly an incredible event!

Basically, Boardwalk on Bulverde is a group of gourmet food trucks that park in an empty lot off Bulverde Road (in between 1604 and 410) throughout the week at different times and offer fast food alternatives at reasonable prices. There are picnic tables, a playground for the kids, and areas to walk around with your dogs.

Texas de Brazil San Antonio

I’ve never been one to say no to a GREAT deal so when I heard about Texas de Brazil’s special, I had to check out San Antonio’s newest Brazilian steakhouse.  The San Antonio location just opened for dinner the first time in December 28, 2010.  There are over 15 locations around the US and internationally!

January 2011 Special

Through the month of January 2011, Texas de Brazil is offering dinners the following INCREDIBLE couple’s special at $74 per couple:

  • Dinner for Two, normally $40 each
  • Dessert for Two, (choices included pies below, Papaya ice cream, and decadent creme brulee)
  • Bottle of Wine or Champagne (including delicious Chilean wine)
  • Non-alcoholic beverages (regular ice tea, soda or coffee)

6 of us went and took advantage of this incredible offer.

Texas de Brazil Steakhouse San Antonio, TX

Other Discounts

According to their website, Texas de Brazil also offers:

  • Senior Citizens Discount – 10% off regular dinner price for up to 8 guests.  65 years or older.
  • Military Discount – 15% discount off regular dinner price for military members or veterans, valid up to 8 guests.
  • E-club - sign up here and also get a coupon for 25% off your entire meal!

The Food

We loved the lobster bisque, cheesy bread rolls, incredible meats!  The traditional Brazilian seasoning style that includes covering the meat w/ rock salts while it cooked was used leaving tasty meats.  Some of the meats easily picked up the salt, if the meat is too salty, consider ordering their cooked to order steaks, done to internal preference and with or without salt.

  • Salad area included mixed greens, seasonal veggies, homemade soups, imported cheeses and bread
  • Meats included my favorite (lamb chops), everyone else’s favorite (Picanha – garlic marinated house steak), Brazilian sausage, pork ribs, bacon-wrapped filet mignon, and much more!
  • Desserts included papaya creme, bananas foster pie, chocolate mousse cake (AMAZING!), creme brulee, key lime pie, and many more options.

Parking

Had no trouble parking downtown, one couple used the valet, right next to the restaurant, the other two couples parked in the Travis parking garage next to the Majestic theater and walked less than 2 blocks to dinner.

The Wine

Below also is a picture of the wine aerialist who deftly soared through the winery, flipping around while she retrieved wines, hand picked by the staff and guests.  There was also beautiful rooms for private events as well.

Pike’s Place Restaurant

On our way to go horseback riding in Bandera, TX (a.k.a. “Cowboy Capital of the World“), we wanted to enjoy a nice lunch beforehand.  After going through the list of restaurants on the city of chambers’ website, we thought that Pike’s Place sounded fabulous!

We were not disappointed.  A quick 20 minutes outside of 1604, off Bandera Road (behind an antique store, Country Accent Antiques, in Pipe Creek), we were greeted by the owner, Kurt Pike.  We learned that Kurt and his wife, Suzanne (whom we didn’t get a chance to meet yet) had spent a couple months renovating the farm house they fell in love with into a cozy restaurant that opened in October of this year, 2010.  Both very experienced in San Antonio’s local restaurant scene, Kurt worked w/ Andrew Weissman for the past six years at Le Reve (which skyrocketed to success in San Antonio).  With all the pieces falling quickly into place, they sold their house in San Antonio before even finding a new place in Bandera.

Kurt prides himself on selecting the freshest seafood from Groomer Seafood and ingredients from local farmers and vendors for their Executive Chef Aaron Gonzalez’s (previously executive chef with Neiman Marcus in Michigan) creations.  This translated deliciously in the dishes we devoured, see pictures below.

You’ll fall in love with Pike’s Place as quickly as we did.  Impossible not to.

Website: http://www.pikesplacerestaurant.com

Hours: Open for lunch from 11 am until 2 pm, Wednesday through Friday; from 5 pm to 9 pm, Wednesday and Thursday, 5 pm to 10 pm, Friday; 11 am to 10 pm, Saturday; and for brunch from 11 am until 3 pm, Sunday.

Windcrest Christmas Lights | San Antonio, TX

So, I should be ashamed because after living in San Antonio, TX since 2001-ish, I have never been to drive through the Windcrest Light Up (link to official website…) and marvel at the Christmas lights.  This year’s Light Up theme was “A Star-Studded Christmas” and there were tons of “stars”!  One yard boosted everyone from the Beatles to basketball players and everyone in between!  One house had music that you could tune into while you watched the lights flash in time w/ the music.

WARNING:  I went on Christmas night and it was pretty bumper to bumper.  Some people walked through the neighborhood which was fairly good sized.  I know though, the people walking made GREAT time and although they may have been chilly, they would have enjoyed the lights far more quickly than anyone sitting in traffic.  I’m not sure how residents deal w/ the traffic, Fenwick was bumper to bumper for 45 minutes!  Bring snacks, activities, and don’t go before the kids have gone to the restroom.  The lights were incredible and even the side streets w/o winners had many neighbors in the holiday spirit.

Check out the google map below, based on the winners list found on the website, I have plotted where each of the houses is for easy Garmin GPS entry. :)

According to their website, the City’s official map of the lighted neighborhood is here.

Z’Tejas at La Cantera | San Antonio, TX

Join me in welcoming Z’Tejas, a favorite to many Austin-natives, to San Antonio, TX!  I had the honor of enjoying the complimentary cuisine during a VIP preview at Z’Tejas this past weekend and I was not disappointed!  This 275 seat restaurant at the newer section of the Shops at La Cantera includes an open kitchen, massive dining on the patio option, with plans to expand to other areas of San Antonio eventually.  I really liked h ow the restaurant was laid out, a larger section was definitely a more traditional dining area but there was also a sports bar section with big screen TVs playing the various college football games, and with the recent beautiful weekend weather, the patio was an airy delight!

We selected three enticing appetizers from the menu followed by 5 tasty entrees (well, 4 entrees and one well-portioned kids meal), and shared 2 sizzling skillets of peach cobbler.  Previous restaurant goers had beat us to the bread pudding with green chile punch, since everything is fresh and homemade, once they’re out, they’re OUT.

Happy Hour!

Right now, happy hour is slated from 3pm-7pm (LOVE the 7pm), Monday through Friday.  Appetizers are half off, sitting ANYWHERE in the restaurant.  They’re also considering a reverse happy hour once things get settled.  There are also great drink specials that sounded very competitive.

Mimosas, Bloody Marys and Marias COMING SOON!

A little bird also told me that starting in December, Z’Tejas San Antonio would also offer a brunch menu w/ incredible mimosas, bloody marys, and bloody marias!  There will be freshly stocked tomato juices, fine champagnes, top shelf vodkas, oh, and a lot of great food menu items too!

Z’Tejas Trivia:

The original Z’Tejas opened in a Victorian-style house on Austin’s infamous 6th Street, still popular with tourists and regulars.
