Girls Inc. Made with Code

Girls Inc. Made with Code

I am very, VERY proud to be the mother of a strong, smart, and bold 11 year old girl who wears shirts with periodic tables and pi jokes. As a mom who majored in Computer Science and minored in Mathematics at college I feel very strongly about the following:

  • Empowering my daughter to feel like she can do anything with hard work
  • Giving her every opportunity to geek out as much as she wants to

People ask me all the time how I do it…and part of it is not letting one day go by where I don’t give her examples of women being strong, smart, and bold…whether it’s in the technology field or somewhere else. I actively seek out opportunities for my daughter to participate in programming, robotics, and engineering camps, activities, games, etc. Unfortunately a lot of times this can cost money and resources to make help her get back and forth in the middle of the day.

I am was so excited when Girls Inc asked me to share information about this FREE 2 hour workshop that they are offering for ANY girl, ages 12-18 to learn more about programming and pursuing opportunities in a technical field. Although it is never too late to explore your dreams, how incredible would it be to give girls the opportunity sooner than later. Let’s not let them get all the way through college before exposing them to needs our industry currently has for Computer Science majoring women.

Today, only 0.4% of female college freshmen plan to major in CS. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, by the time girls in middle school go to college, there will be one million more CS jobs than computer scientists to fill them. Today, only about 10% of high schools offer Computer Science classes. And when they do, the curriculum isn’t always best suited to be inclusive of girls.

For the past four years, I have attended the Grace Hopper Conference which celebrates women in computing whether in the industry, academics, or majoring in school. Four years ago was the first time I had ever been in a room with 2,000 women who also majored in Computer Science. It was an amazing feeling. Since high school I was in advanced math classes where there were more boys then I went into Computer Science at UTSA and there were only a handful of girls there too. If we encourages girls 12-18 to start actively learning about a career in code, a hobby in coding, the possibilities programming presents, there will be less girls who are the only girl in the room. There will be more diversity in the classrooms from high school on up.

I <3 Girls Inc.

Girls Inc. San Antonio presents a “Made with Code” party is open to all girls ages 12-18 to demonstrate how programming can help make any dream come true, regardless of the interest area. Technology and programming are continuing to be a huge part of people’s lives. You don’t have to have any experience programming.

2014 Free Summer Movies in San Antonio My good friend Stacy of Kids Stuff World enjoyed my post on 2014 Summer Reading Programs for Kids where I highlight programs that incentivize kids to read over the summer so they don’t lose any of the valuable things they learned during the school year. “You’d be hard pressed to find a sym-phunnier crime story than this. ”  — TIME MAGAZINE

Tickets: $8 children, $16 adults

We just enjoyed the wonderful, family oriented San Antonio Symphony, “Pictures at an Exhibition”, the conductor took us through each movement with pictures and explanations of the meanings and inspirations.  I am very excited to offer FOUR FREE TICKETS!

The Composer is Dead is a riotous collaboration between composer Nathaniel Stookey and children’s author Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler) that combines two elements of great story-telling: music and suspense. In a special Halloween-themed concert, San Antonio Symphony Associate Conductor Akiko Fujimoto will lead the orchestra in a gripping murder mystery where every member of the orchestra is a suspect. Originally created as an orchestral work, The Composer Is Dead was released as a book in 2009.

Family concerts are designed for children ages 4-11, but can be enjoyed by people of all ages and are a lively and informative approach to concert-going, with a variety of hands-on activities during the hour before the concert begins:

  • Instrument Petting Zoo, an opportunity to experiment with and play orchestral instruments
  • Hands-on musical arts and crafts stations

The Phoenician Resort | Scottsdale, AZ

It seems counterintuitive that going on vacation requires a lot of work. Unfortunately, most of the time, it does. You have to research the best places to stay, things in the area to do, great places to eat. And if it’s an out of town vacation, you want to get the best bang for your buck, do everything you possibly can, and avoid at all costs the feeling of regret when you come home because you missed something. At least that’s how I normally vacation. Not so relaxing.

Enter The Phoenician. After reading what I’m about to describe, you might not believe me…but this oasis in the Arizona dessert exists! It offers everything anyone could ever want. And it’s even more fabulous in person!

Location, Location, Location

Literally at the base of Camelback Mountain, this beautiful, AAA Five Diamond Resort was only 15 minutes from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and minutes from Scottsdale’s shopping districts, it was easy to get onto major highways (when we headed to my husband’s graduation).

Home Suite Home

There are almost 650 guest rooms available that come in three different types:

  • Guest Rooms – centrally located, fantastic views, large living space, beautiful restrooms
  • Casitas – doorstep parking and private entrances
  • Canyon Suites – the boutique resort within a resort, offering a secluded pool and cabanas

We stayed in the beautiful, Grand Deluxe Room, and were not disappointed! Slippers were laid out for us by the beds, three chocolates laid on the pillows every night and every morning we enjoyed a beautiful view of the pool from our private terrace.

The closets had an easy to use safe, plenty of wooden hangers, a shoe horn, luggage rack, and two fluffy robes, waiting to envelope me. So I slipped on my robe and my slippers and prepared for a relaxing soak in the massive tub (separate from the equally massive shower.)

Oh, and did I mention that housekeeping comes TWICE a day, once in the morning and once in the evening to turn down your sheets.

Fabulous Phoenician Features!

There is so much information to offer about the Phoenician, it’s hard to mention it all. (So I’ll be doing a series of posts!) Here are some fabulous features we enjoyed this past weekend:

  • A dazzling $25 million dollar art collection. Many of the late Allan Houser’s life-size Native American bronze sculptures, along with photorealist waterscapes by David Kessler, as well as rare European paintings and antiques, are prominently displayed throughout the resort.

  • A two-acre Cactus Garden. Stretching along the northern edge of the resort’s grounds at the base of Camelback Mountain, this scenic spot showcases 250 varieties of cacti and succulents. Also home to several “local residents,” including cottontail rabbits, chuckwalla, chipmunks and quail.

Phoenician Fun!

  • Grape & Grain. Retail shop offers complimentary cocktail mixology class on Fridays and Saturdays at 3pm.
  • Hoppy Hour. Kids can stop by the Funicians Club from 4-5pm daily and pick up a special gift!
  • Activities at The Park. Cnter includes a movie theatre, air hockey, foosball, board games, video games, basketball court and covered playground.
  • Koi Fish Feeding. A guest favorite, meet at the Necklace Lake Lagoon daily at 9:30am sharp as schools of exotic Koi fish surface for food.

Poolside at the Phoenician

  • Endless water. The resort boasts NINE refreshing pools and a 165-foot waterslide. The Canyon Suites offers an “edgeless” oval swimming pool covering more than 2,800 square feet and filled with nearly 74,000 gallons of water. The resort’s “signature” pool with The Phoenician logo in the center is inlaid with hand-crafted iridescent mother of pearl tiles.
  • Poolside luxury. Private cabanas feature ceiling fans, telephone, computer hook up, daily newspaper, robes upon request, lip balm, fresh fruit, bottled water, two reserved lounge chairs and two teak sitting chairs and a love seat. Cabanas at the Canyon Pool measure 200 square feet and feature a bathroom with a shower and amenities.
  • Necklace Lake Lagoon. This environmentally designed lagoon is woven throughout the casita area to create humidity for tropical plants and serve as a recirculation system for watering the resort’s landscaping. The lagoon is the home for multi-colored Koi (Japanese carp), Tilapia (small fish from Africa,) Striped Bass, Red Eared Turtles, Canadian Geese and wild Mallards.

Dining In

Although I’ll be featuring the restaurants in another post, here are some teasers about the Phoenician I found tasty!

  • Oenophiles take note: The resort employs one of only two master sommeliers in the state of Arizona.
  • Afternoon Tea. The resort’s daily afternoon tea service features “Oberon” patterned Wedgwood china. (More to come!!)

  • Toasted to perfection. In-Room Dining delivers a toaster to the room (instead of toasting breads beforehand) to ensure warmth.
  • In-house pasta and bake shops. The resort’s pasta and bake shops prepare fresh pasta, pastries and candies, as well as breads and rolls daily. Many of the resort’s artisan breads are available for retail purchase.
  • Evening treats. Belgian chocolates are provided every evening during turndown.

Disclaimer: The Phoenician offered me a media rate which I gladly accepted. All my high opinions of The Phoenician are my own.

Stores Offering Free Kid Activities

This post was inspired by my friends who had babies recently but are getting to the age where they’re ready to rock and roll.  Free kid events at stores!  Although I have posted about it in the past…I was going through previous blog posts and some of the links have become extinct!  Here are some oldies but goodies, posts from my past:

Stores Offering FREE Kid Activities

Lakeshore Learning – store offers a Saturday arts and craft activity.  Not only are the crafts cleverly designed but also very intricate and interesting.  We normally go for about an hour or so, doing the craft and then going around the store and playing with all the toys laid out on display.  We sometimes bring a friend or meet someone there.  On holidays they offer multiple things to do, perfect gifts for all the grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Stores Offering Free Kid Activities lowes build and grow kids workshop

Lowe’s – signup because supplies and slots go by for this bi-monthly clinic for kids…make a putting green, pirate ship, and many more fun things, again FREE!  Activities are from 10-11 and you get the Lowe’s apron on the first visit to collect pins for each craft.

Pinot’s Palette | Alamo Heights

Pinot’s Palette – Alamo Heights is the franchise’s first location in San Antonio, TX and we were ready to welcome them with open arms. The fabulous Heather Hunter of The Cowgirl Gourmet arranged an incredible girls night out for some of the local San Antonio bloggers and boy did we have fun! I have never done this type of painting class before but I definitely would do it again!

One of the owners Christina welcomed our group on a Thursday night for a complimentary painting class. Artists in resident Lisa, with assistance from Sonia, were incredibly encouraging as they guided us newbies through the artistic process, starting with a completely black canvas!

We all arrived around 6:30pm so that we could unload our baked goodies, have a snack, and catch our breath with a nice glass of wine we were able to bring in. Although we brought our own wine and food, Pinot Palette provided the stemware and plastic utensils and plates, along with little bottles of water. They are also working on a menu option with EZ’s for easy catering if you throw a private, special event and don’t want the hassle of catering out.

Current Living Social Deal (purchase until 2/27!)  Purchase here!

The picture for the evening was: Deco Martini

And we all nervously glanced around the room and laughed when Lisa promised we’d be able to reproduce ourselves. We were given a blank canvas and the colors we needed to miss with two different sized brushes. Slowly our canvas turned into presentable bar art! It was a very informal environment although they did pace us a bit so that we’d have time to finish all the intricate details. But I didn’t feel rushed. We even got a couple short breaks while we waited for our paint to set.

The artists have been working as such for years, often also teaching at local colleges and in the community. I would recommend this experience as a Girls Night Out, date (although it’s not for everyone’s husband…), and kids birthday parties! They are very flexible and can help you create a very memorable evening.

Melissa & Doug Terrific Twenty List and Giveaway

Although I pride myself on being a good shopper, the holidays is a hard time for even the most professional shopper. It’s one thing to be the parent of the children you’re shopping for…shopping for someone else’s kids can be even harder! What will they like? Is it age appropriate? Will it drive the parents nuts (though I find that people who don’t have children worry about this one less…) Luckily Melissa and Doug take out all the guess work with their top 20 list for great 2012 holiday gifts.

And don’t feel limited to these awesome options. I really like a lot of the games and puzzles they come up with. My daughter has the hangman game which is very cute and great for long car rides to grandma’s house this year! You’ll no longer have to deal with paper and crayons getting smashed into the car seat!

Another gift for older kids that I saw recommended on another parenting website was the Suspend Family Game which is an aerial version of Jenga!

Don’t forget to check out their Facebook page here to learn more ways that you can win one of their daily contests! And you don’t even have to go that far!

Geekette Bits Giveaway!

I will be giving away the following gift from Melissa and Doug that has been a favorite of my daughter and I for a very long time!

Not only do you get an absolutely adorable Trunki, a portable suitcase that your kids can also sit on or “ride” during long walks across airport terminals, you’ll also be able to decorate it! I picked one that I thought would be great for a boy or girl.

Enter to Win:

@geekettebits I want to win @MelissaAndDoug‘s trunki! http://bit.ly/TbU2di #TerrificTwenty

{ Although Melissa and Doug let me sample one of their products my opinions are definitely my own and I wouldn’t recommend them if I didn’t love the quality and creativity of all of their products! }
