Restaurant Week – Lunch – Menu

The second you drive onto the lavish grounds of The Lodge, the noise from the city and life in general quickly fades.  You’re struck by the spacious mansion and green landscaping.  Finally getting to visit during lunch, during Restaurant Week no less !!!, I was not disappointed.  Celebrating my birthday there a couple years ago and enjoying on of their opulent 7 course menus on another visit, I was curious as to the ambiance and food mid-day.

The restaurant was fully bustling when we arrived at noon…I would definitely recommend reservations.  Some of the other stops during Restaurant Week did not require them but this one is not one to chance.

We waited semi-patiently for a couple minutes in their plush , rustic lounge area before being led up the winding staircase through several different smaller rooms.  We were sat in a bright, open table with windows on 3 sides of us.

With 2 choices for each course and math minors on our diplomas, my friend and I quickly calculated getting of each dish.  The lobster-shrimp bisque was hearty and satisfying.  The mixed green salad that included apples, candied pecans, cherve goat cheese, and a vinaigrette was a playful interpretation of a classic with the flavors dancing happily together.

The main course, a choice of chicken roulade or Atlantic salmon were both enticing choices.  The salmon had an incredible taste and texture and left us guessing what patient steps the chef carefully executed.  The chicken with pearl onions and wild mushrooms was juicy and delicious.

The dessert was an apple tart and nutella-dark chocolate souffle .  The souffle, rich, and laden with chocolate on chocolate, paired with a banana caramel milkshake!  The tart was accompanied w/ a sharp house made caramel sauce that made the dish pop.

For $15, this meal was a steal.  Fortunately you won’t be limited to thievery to only this week – The Lodge servers lunch, 2 courses for $12 dollars and 3 courses for $16 on a daily basis.

Tre Trattoria was a little hard to find once we got into the Broadway shopping center, right next to the Witte on the same side of Broadway.  We did get a nice scenic detour of all the buildings and offices in that are area enjoying the pretty landscaping and quietness.  Once we found the restaurant we were floored.  I loved the decorations on both the outside and indoor seating, Jason Dady has done it again!

Restaurant Week – Lunch – Menu

Visiting the Riverwalk frequently with out of town guests, I’m horrified that it has taken Restaurant Week to finally make time for Boudro’s Texas Bistro.  After entering from the street level, taking the elevator to the River level, and entering through the back of the restaurant, this eatery left little to be desired and many memories to savor!

Starting with the heirloom tomato salad and tomato soup with a HUGE mound of lump crab tabbouleh, we knew our meal was going to be good.  Both 1st course choices were 1st rate indeed!

Choosing the chopped salad and grilled filet with a vegetable enchilada, the steak was fabulous and the salad, mixed tableside, left us wanting more!  The meat was a generous medium-rare and disintegrated in your mouth.

The dessert was so refreshing that I’ll continue to crave it on hot summer days.  A trio of fresh sorbets, the mango peach was expectantly good, the blackberry light yet flavorful, and the lemon basil had us spreading the good news of the winning combination.  With raspberry coulis drizzled and supported on an almond lace wafer, the dessert remains my favorite.

Restaurant Week – Lunch – Menu

Although the plan was to celebrate the beginning of Restaurant Week with a 3-course meal, we were distracted by the incredible, lavishly prepared weekly Sunday Champagne Brunch that left nothing to be desired.

Instead of spending $15 a person, we spent $40 but for a special treat or occasion, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate!

This meal included:

  • unlimited mimosas and free flowing champagne
  • whole-shrimp chevice, raw oyster bar, smoked salmon/capers/creme fraiche
  • salad station where you select ingredients and the station manager mixes them w/ dressing
  • homemade breads, olive tapenades, a wide range of cheeses, fresh veggies
  • breakfast favorites like french toast, fresh fruit, bacon, eggs, sausage, hashbrowns
  • hearty lunch options like a pan seared fish, prime rib w/ choice of 3 different sauces, pastas, briskets, excellent/crisp veggies
  • desserts included fruit tarts, a banana fosters station, German chocolate cake

I thought everything was fabulous and recommend this to everyone!  The Restaurant Week menu looks very appealing as well, don’t forget to check it out…just not on a Sunday. ;-)

Restaurant Week – Lunch – Menu

The first official lunch tasted during 2010 Restaurant Week, it set a wonderful tone for the rest of the week!  Across the street from the Majestic Theater, it’s one of the places that’s easy to get to downtown with a parking garage on adjacent corner.  ($5 or less, depending on how quickly you eat/linger/wait in-between courses.)

Calling ahead of time for reservations (a whole 5 minutes, from the parking garage to be precise) we were met by our friendly host, with Restaurant Week menus in hand.  Starting with the Chef’s soup du jour (a rich tomato bisque) and a mixed green salad, we enjoyed the choices of 3 different breads before moving to the next course.  Although I still need to check, the bread was served with butter, radishes, a pepper, and a pickle!  The pickle, although surprising, was delicious, and the radish packed a spicy little kick.

Although my friend and I were the underdog against 3 entree choices, we eventually settled on the 8oz Sirloin with porcini mushroom whipped potatoes and a fabulous cabernet wine demi and the New York steak sandwich, served on crisp French bread, a wonderful horseradish aioli, leaving little to be desired.  (Discounting the 3rd entree choice of course…a Panko crusted Ahi Tuna).

Our meal ended with tropical favorite – key lime pie.  Served with fresh whipped cream, the graham cracker crust was solid against the strong, lime goodness of the pie.

If you don’t make it this week, please stop by before or after a show at the theater.

Choicolate Artisan Chocolates

After running errands all day, my sister and I decided to treat ourselves to lunch at Auden’s Kitchen, one of our new favorite restaurants.  Located in the same shopping center, we noticed a sign nestled in called “Choicolate | Artisan Chocolates”.  We decided we wanted to check it out after lunch.

Website: http://choicolate.com

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/choicolate.fb

We discovered that this hidden gym not only featured hand-crafted chocolates including fun flavors like:

  • Mango & Habanero
  • Hazelnut Latte
  • Strawberry Balsamic
  • Milk Vanilla

but also had a delightful story behind the sweets store as well.  As husband and wife pair, last name Choi…decided to follow the wife’s dream of opening a chocolate store where everything was handmade, in small batches for the ultimate taste and presentation.  Wrapped individually with great detail, these chocolates make an adorable gift for someone you barely know or know very well.  We sampled the incredibly intense and more traditional flavors before settling on the chocolates pictured below.  The box also includes a guide so you’ll not be surprised (unless you want to be!!) and receivers can match the chocolates with the pictures.

Visit frequently as the menu and chocolate designs always are changing.  I bet they would be open to suggestions and requests you might have too – I could imagine these being an incredible party gift at showers and celebrations, both intimate and large!  Contact information here.

Owned by Andrew Weissman, I’ve been wanting to try this restaurant for a LONG time! I was not disappointed. After visiting the Pearl Farmers Market one Saturday morning, my daughter and I entered the pristine, modern restaurant. Although offered sidewalk seating, we opted for cool A/C.

Our first wow moment came when we were presented with a beautiful citrus plate. Although I originally though they were blood orange, we could have any combination of grapefruit, oranges, and limes for our ice cold water. The grapefruit had a wonderful fragrance and refreshing flare.

My daughter, a GREAT eater, ordered the Margarita Pizza and I had a thinly sliced pork cutlet with a delicious balsamic reduction. Both were great. Although I’m sure dinner is more formal, I felt very comfortable with my daughter on her best manners. The restaurant has an open kitchen which gives a great ambience.

Tasty Bytes

  • We were full but the desserts are definitely something we’ll save room for next time. During our visit we saw cannoli dipped in different chocolates and chopped nuts, tiramisu, and other tasty treats.
  • We also over heard the server mention that reservations were strongly recommended, especially the closer to the weekend you got.
  • There is an upstairs dining area that they sometimes use for parties.

Tasty Byte: Broadway 5050

I enjoyed trying Broadway 5050 with my sister for the first time last week.  Although our server was moving in a slow pace, it did not seem to be the theme among the rest of the staff at the Colonnade location.  Giving her a benefit of a doubt, we enjoyed the rest of meal in the diner/sports bar feeling restaurant.  The food was good, large portions, and all for a good price.  Although neither of us had tried it before, we’d probably go back with friends another time.  (I’d like to investigate their dart boards – would also be fun to take in a sporting event!)

Auden’s Kitchen | San Antonio, TX

After hearing only positive things about the still semi-new Auden’s Kitchen, I finally had a chance to make my way over to Bruce Auden of Biga on the Banks’ newest restaurant! It definitely lived up to the hype heard and I cannot wait to return! I went on a Sunday afternoon with my 6 year old who enjoys eating as much as I do and we both rated very enthusiastically.

Website:
http://audenskitchen.com

I thought the brunch menu offered an incredible deal because it included 2 drinks (sparkling wine, mimosas, sangria, beers, etc.), a mixed salad, entrée choice, and mixed fruit! Take a second to explore all the menus here.

I actually ordered off the dinner menu – “whole roasted trout” which I thought was fabulous. I did not come across one bone and enjoyed the flavor infused by lemon slices and thyme stuffed cooked inside. The garlicky kale was incredible – great burst of flavor!

My daughter selected the “fried chicken bits” off the “Kids Eats” menu and her first response was, “Wow! I didn’t know bits would be SO big!” This is essentially the buttermilk fried chicken dish offered on the brunch and dinner menu. KFC has nothing on Auden’s fried chicken! She gently suggested ordering my own plate of chicken if I was going to continue eating all of hers. She generously received a drumstick and boneless breast.

Enjoying our meal so much and saving a little bit of room for dessert we happily took our server’s suggestion to try the warm Apple Rhubarb pie with fresh vanilla ice cream made daily.

Hung Cuong Pho Restaurant | San Antonio

Actually searching for a junior-sized basketball, my daughter and I had a serendipitous encounter with the Hung Cuong Restaurant when stopping at the sporting goods store.  Although we didn’t find the basketball (it was actually a winter sports store…) we did find a new Vietnamese restaurant to try.  We stopped by before basketball practice later in the week.

Address: 12730 I-10 West Suite 302 (map)
San Antonio, TX 78230

Phone: (210) 691-1500

Immediately we were greeted with a friendly, familiar face!  Literally…our waitress remembered my daughter’s favorite dish from her previous place of employment Pho San Antonio (my LONG-time Vietnamese haunt…)  Although they didn’t have my daughter’s favorite dumplings, we did find plenty of great treats to eat.  Lately on a Pho kick, I ordered the steak Pho which came with beautiful garnishes.

Hung Cuong:

*Although they don’t have a kid’s meal they will serve any dish in a child sized portion, including the soups.  Also, I always ask for an extra bowl if I get the Pho to share with my daughter…just 2 things that keep this restaurant family friendly. :)

Soups

Items 19 through 51 on the menu are dedicated to various fragrant, hearty soups varying in complexity and intensity.

Hung Cuong: Special Pho

Fried Rice

52 through 63 include every combination of fried rice possible…get yours with shrimp, chicken, shrimp, curry, eggs, or with vegetables.  (In case you’re curious, the menu mentions being a Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant which I think contributes to the fried rice dishes.)

Pan Fried Flat Rice Noodles

These are a thicker, egg noodle that are also very tasty.  Although I didn’t try this dish yet, I hope to.

Crispy Egg Noodles

This is one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes…I have had this several times at San Antonio Pho…I’ll have to taste test it here and also let you know.  The thin, crispy noodles pack a great punch with the rich sauces.

Rice

Another classic Vietnamese dish, simple and incredibly delicious.  Served with fish sauce, rice, pickled carrots and radishes, fresh tomatoes, and cucumbers, this is a great dish to eat in the summer when everything else is too heavy.  I normally drizzle half of the sauce on my food (this time I also forgot to ask for a fried egg on top…another tasty topper, not always on the mention…they’ll be impressed when you ask!)

Don’t forget to dip your spring rolls in the sauce as well.  Sometimes I mix some of the Sriracha sauce a.k.a. “Cock” Sauce (um, there’s a rooster on the bottle – the menu goes into significant details about this Thai hot sauce from the city of Si Racha) into the fish sauce for my spring rolls (and to evenly mix into pork rice plate…)…only a couple dots for me.

Hung Cuong: Wok Fried Pork Chop w/ Egg Roles

Vermicelli Noodle

One of my daughter’s favorite Vietnamese dishes is the noodle and egg roll bowl.  Although the noodles and egg roll combo normally comes with lettuce, bean sprouts, julienne carrots, and fish sauce, she skips the lettuce and carrots (…she claims until she gets older…)  Its another light dish that’s especially refreshing in the summer when heavy dishes are just too much in the extreme San Antonio heat (didn’t have my camera with me when we ordered that dish.) :(

Hung Cuong Specialties

89-99 include house specials…I’ll be sure to try them and let you know!

PHO-sho!

To finish up this post, I thought it would be helpful to give a little background on the very popular Vietnamese noodle shop.  Pho – rice noodle soup with an incredibly rich, tasty broth.  It’s pronounced “fa” like you’re about to say a profane, 4-letter word…and it’s a staple item on any authentic Vietnamese restaurant.  It is a HOT (temperature, not spicy) broth filled with various meats and rice noodles that finish cooking in the hotness.  Meats vary between thinly sliced steak, flank, brisket, meatballs, chicken, tripe, tendon, or any combination of the aforementioned carnivorous options.  It’s incredible comforting on a cold day, when you’re feeling under the weather, the intense flavors instantly transport you into a better place.

Broth add-ons:

Just like you can enhance your favorite browser, you can also dress your broth/soup up with even more flavors!

  • Fresh bean sprouts – I dump all of them…it adds a great crunch to the soup!
  • Cilantro (I always ask for extra…love it!)  I twist into thirds and drop into my soup…I normally cannot do enough…
  • Lime wedges (Normally squeeze however many wedges are provided…1-2…)
  • Mint Leaves (I only use a couple, torn in half and dropped into the soup…)
  • Fresh jalapeno slices (I’m can’t handle super spicy but enjoy a little kick…I normally dunk one jalapeno into my soup and take it out when it starts to taste too spicy.)
  • Sriracha sauce (see above)
  • Hoison sauce which adds a little sweet and spicy to an already inviting broth.  I normally fill up my spoon half-full and stir into the soup

Hung Cuong: Pho Condiments

Delicious, enjoyed a lot.  Great customer service!

Best Korean Food in San Antonio

Ilsong Garden

http://www.ilsonggarden.com/

210.366.4508

6905 Blanco Rd. 78216

*Groupon is trying to get Ilsong Garden for one of the daily deals…when you visit let the owners know you’d love that too! :D

Ilsong Garden is the best Korean restaurant in San Antonio, hands down proving it with the numerous awards received from MYSA, the Current, Zagat’s, and other culinary critics.  As my sister and I were both adopted from Korea I feel qualified (albeit unreasonably so) to make such a blanket statement!  I have tried several different Korean restaurants in San Antonio; there is a clustering of them near Fort Sam Houston.  For me, Korean food is one of the milder food groups, not a lot of risk, tons of rewards!

The food is great!  Some of the tables along the wall have grills, watch out for the flaps, you will spill your drink…if you have time and are looking for a fun new experience request on of these tables during dinner and enjoy preparing your food table side!  The lunch specials, served Monday through Friday, which we had today, are hearty and well worth the trip and price, the Bulgogi plate includes a salad, two fried yaki mandu, a heaping serving of rice, and a lot of meat.  My co-workers and I go frequently throughout the month, making more new fans each time.  When I’m not there for lunch, I frequently visit with my daughter or friends on the weekends or quickly stop by while running errands to pick up takeout.

Although sometimes they get really busy and it takes a little longer to request banchan refills (see below) or the check, the service is always first-class!  The owners are always mingling with the customers, most on a first name basis…you always hear customers introduce their guests to the Cacy’s or asking about their children that also sometimes work there.  My 6 year old daughter loves going, her favorite waitress always sneaks her Korean candy and lavishes her with verbal affection.

Oh and before I forget…don’t be surprised to see a sushi menu towards the back either.  The sushi chef, who enjoys golfing on his Sundays off, was trained by one of the best sushi chefs in Korea and you can tell!  Plump pieces and creative rolls leave little to be desired.  If you’re eating with your eyes he’ll quickly come over and wrap up your sushi before you can throw it into a takeout container, ensuring that the sushi is properly coupled with fresh ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce packets.  Little touches like this bring me back for more every time.

Some of My Favorites

When in Rome, knowing what to order…you don’t have to be Korean or critic to enjoy a meal at Ilsong Garden.  Here are a couple dishes I always recommend to beginners…hooks even the pickiest eaters…for life!

Bulgogi
– is thinly sliced, marinated meat (normally beef but could also be chicken/pork) that is traditionally cooked over a flame grill but can also be cooked in a skillet.  Think of it as Korean BBQ.  Make at home, ask your butcher to thinly slice sirloin steak and marinate with something similar to Noh’s Korean BBQ seasoning packet.  (BTW, I like a LOT of Noh seasoning products!)

Bibimbap – is one of my dad’s favorites.  Literally meaning “mixed rice”, this dish consists of white rice in a bowl, an assortment of mixed vegetables (sautéed spinach, julienned carrots and cucumbers, bean sprouts to name a few), slices of meat (Bulgogi) or tofu, a chili pepper paste (“gochujang”), and a fried, over easy egg on top.  Mix everything together and enjoy!  Although it can be served in a “regular” bowl, if there is a “hot pot” option take it!  This means the entire bowl will be hot enough to hear the rice crackling…when you get to the bottom of your mean the rice will offer a crunchy, tasty treat!

Chop Chae Bop – glass noodles as we call them in my family…are stir fried clear (cellophane) noodles, veggies, normally served with beef.  Chap Chae alone is the noodle dish, served with rice includes the “Bop”.  Normally not a spicy dish…

Yaki Mandu – Think of this as a crescent shaped dumpling that is either pan seared or deep fried.  I like both although am partial to the deep fried variation and are stuffed with a mixture of beef, glass noodles, and finely chopped vegetables.  My daughter cannot eat enough of these.

Banchan – these are the little side dishes that accompany the main entrée, comparable to Spanish tapas or meze from the Mediterranean.  Although you receive less at lunch, we still go 5 with our midday meal special.  These little sides are to be eaten with the main, in the same bite if desired.  They are normally set in the middle of the table to be shared by all.  At Ilsong Garden they have never questioned my requests for free refills either…I guess they understand a deserving palate.  Also, if they don’t have one of my favorites (especially during lunch or busy times) I still ask the wait staff and they’re always happy to look.

  • Kimchi comes in many shapes and forms and is essentially fermented vegetables, usually cabbage, seasoned with chili peppers.  My favorite is the “kimchi radish” which is cubed radish.
  • Namul (steamed, marinated, or stir fried) are a variety of veggies.  My favorites are the spinach (lightly cooked with sesame seed oil and garlic), the chilled bean sprouts, picked julienned white radish, broccoli, yum!)
  • Many others…potatoes, shredded squid, a sweet “cake”
