Books about Women

Books about Women

One of the most important things we can do for creating equality between men and women is to share the stories of women from our past and present.  History hides the fearless journeys many women have embarked on, so we need everyone to be curious.  Wonder outloud (and with your friends and family) what happened.  Dig deeper into the stories and ask why things happened and who really did them.  Here are some books to get started.  Read for yourself and for our future.

Wonder Women: 25 Innovators, Inventors, and Trailblazers Who Changed History

·  Alice Ball, the chemist who developed an effective treatment for leprosy—only to have the credit taken by a man?
·  Mary Sherman Morgan, the rocket scientist whose liquid fuel compounds blasted the first U.S. satellite into orbit?
·  Huang Daopo, the inventor whose weaving technology revolutionized textile production in China—centuries before the cotton gin?

Smart women have always been able to achieve amazing things, even when the odds were stacked against them. In Wonder Women, author Sam Maggs tells the stories of the brilliant, brainy, and totally rad women in history who broke barriers as scientists, engineers, mathematicians, adventurers, and inventors. Plus, interviews with real-life women in STEM careers, an extensive bibliography, and a guide to women-centric science and technology organizations—all to show the many ways the geeky girls of today can help to build the future.

Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers

A charmingly illustrated and educational book, New York Times best seller Women in Science highlights the contributions of fifty notable women to the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) from the ancient to the modern world. Full of striking, singular art, this fascinating collection also contains infographics about relevant topics such as lab equipment, rates of women currently working in STEM fields, and an illustrated scientific glossary. The trailblazing women profiled include well-known figures like primatologist Jane Goodall, as well as lesser-known pioneers such as Katherine Johnson, the African-American physicist and mathematician who calculated the trajectory of the 1969 Apollo 11 mission to the moon.

Princesses Behaving Badly: Real Stories from History Without the Fairy-Tale Endings

You think you know her story. You’ve read the Brothers Grimm, you’ve watched the Disney cartoons, and you cheered as these virtuous women lived happily ever after. But real princesses didn’t always get happy endings. Sure, plenty were graceful and benevolent leaders, but just as many were ruthless in their quest for power—and all of them had skeletons rattling in their royal closets. Princess Stephanie von Hohenlohe was a Nazi spy. Empress Elisabeth of the Austro-Hungarian empire slept wearing a mask of raw veal. Princess Olga of Kiev slaughtered her way to sainthood while Princess Lakshmibai waged war on the battlefield, charging into combat with her toddler son strapped to her back. Princesses Behaving Badly offers true tales of all these princesses and dozens more in a fascinating read that’s pefect for history buffs, feminists, and anyone seeking a different kind of bedtime story.

Rad Women Worldwide: Artists and Athletes, Pirates and Punks, and Other Revolutionaries Who Shaped History

Bad Girls Throughout History

Aphra Behn, first female professional writer. Sojourner Truth, activist and abolitionist. Ada Lovelace, first computer programmer. Marie Curie, first woman to win the Nobel Prize. Joan Jett, godmother of punk. The 100 revolutionary women highlighted in this gorgeously illustrated book were bad in the best sense of the word: they challenged the status quo and changed the rules for all who followed. From pirates to artists, warriors, daredevils, scientists, activists, and spies, the accomplishments of these incredible women vary as much as the eras and places in which they effected change. Featuring bold watercolor portraits and illuminating essays by Ann Shen, Bad Girls Throughout History is a distinctive, gift-worthy tribute.

Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War

Karen Abbott, the New York Times bestselling author of Sin in the Second City and “pioneer of sizzle history” (USA Today), tells the spellbinding true story of four women who risked everything to become spies during the Civil War.

Karen Abbott illuminates one of the most fascinating yet little known aspects of the Civil War: the stories of four courageous women—a socialite, a farmgirl, an abolitionist, and a widow—who were spies.

After shooting a Union soldier in her front hall with a pocket pistol, Belle Boyd became a courier and spy for the Confederate army, using her charms to seduce men on both sides. Emma Edmonds cut off her hair and assumed the identity of a man to enlist as a Union private, witnessing the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. The beautiful widow, Rose O’Neale Greenhow, engaged in affairs with powerful Northern politicians to gather intelligence for the Confederacy, and used her young daughter to send information to Southern generals. Elizabeth Van Lew, a wealthy Richmond abolitionist, hid behind her proper Southern manners as she orchestrated a far-reaching espionage ring, right under the noses of suspicious rebel detectives.

Using a wealth of primary source material and interviews with the spies’ descendants, Abbott seamlessly weaves the adventures of these four heroines throughout the tumultuous years of the war. With a cast of real-life characters including Walt Whitman, Nathaniel Hawthorne, General Stonewall Jackson, detective Allan Pinkerton, Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, and Emperor Napoleon III, Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy draws you into the war as these daring women lived it.

Headstrong: 52 Women Who Changed Science-and the World

Headstrong delivers a powerful, global, and engaging response. Covering Nobel Prize winners and major innovators, as well as lesser-known but hugely significant scientists who influence our every day, Rachel Swaby’s vibrant profiles span centuries of courageous thinkers and illustrate how each one’s ideas developed, from their first moment of scientific engagement through the research and discovery for which they’re best known. This fascinating tour reveals these 52 women at their best—while encouraging and inspiring a new generation of girls to put on their lab coats.

Ship Books to Veterans | Operation Paperback

It is very hard to get me to be motivated about cleaning. As I was going through my bookshelves though and trying to reduce the amount of “stuff” we have, I wondered if there was a program through which I could send these gently loved books to our military veterans and their families and there is! Operation Paperback started in 1999 and volunteers have sent over 1.9 million books around the world.

Operation Paperback Ship Books to Veterans and Military Families

In addition to overseas locations, Operation Paperback provides books to military and veterans hospitals located within the United States, as well as USO centers at US Airport transit points. In 2012, we also added a new program that offers a free shipment of books to any military family.

Our organization has several ongoing special projects, including:

  • Providing books from military Professional Reading Lists to support service member professional development goals;
  • Supporting Chaplains as they counsel troops, both before redeployment and after reunification, with a variety of specifically-requested titles;
  • Providing Iraqi Phrasebooks for units on the ground so that they may communicate effectively with local populations;
  • Supplying books for the annual book give away at NSA Souda Bay in Crete, Greece for service members and their families;
  • Supplying children’s books to deployed soldiers who read to their children via webcam or on DVDs

If you’re not convinced, take a couple minutes to read from hundreds of letters sent to Operation Paperback thanking the volunteers for the books!

How it all Started

In 1999, Chief Master Sergeant Rick Honeywell was deployed to a four-month stint in Kuwait. To his dismay, he found himself on a base that had no recreation facilities – no movies, no library, no gymnasium.

Chief Honeywell’s wife, Chrissy, and other Air Force spouses responded by sending the squadron a gigantic care package of candy, games and books. Chrissy’s father, Dan Bowers, became inspired by the situation. He selected paperback books from his own shelves to send overseas. Then he turned to others for contributions. Soon he had collected cases of books and shipped them all to Rick in Kuwait. “Before anyone realized it,” recalls Chrissy, “There were 500 books over in Kuwait, and Rick’s squadron was building bookshelves.” Operation Paperback was born.

Everyone on staff, including the Board Members are all volunteers. Every month, 20,000+ books are sent to troops, veterans, and military families.

Love and Respect Experience | Dr Emerson

The Love & Respect Experience

A Husband-Friendly Devotional that Wives Truly Love

Dr. Emerson Eggerichs

The Love & Respect Experience | Devotional by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs

WARNING!! This book may change the course of your relationship for the rest of your life. For the better! Emerson (accessibly referred to by his first name) has come up with a year-long relationship devotional, based thousands of surveyed couples. It’s not a daily devotional because real-life couples can’t commit to every day. Life happens. And when it does, you want to have Love & Respect under your belt.

I love reading relationship books. I feel ridiculously empowered after understanding the ways other people might perceive things, especially in ways I had never considered. I felt just this way after reading this book. Being able to offer a comparable selection of self-help/relationship books to any mainstream bookstore, it’s hard to find something I haven’t heard before. Emerson surprised me with a couple great thoughts. I would recommend this devotional for any adult, whether you’re in a marriage, a couple’s relationship, or single. We have to nurture relationships all around us, at work, in our extended families, and networks…this book gives you the tools to understand where people of the other sex are coming from. And it’s not always even a guy/girl thing. Emerson very clearly states that there are two kinds of lenses people see through, pink and blue. Sometimes guys can see through “pink” lenses and girls can see through “blue.” Sometimes you see purple. The important part is to understand where the person is coming from, why they’re reacting the way that they are, and how to get off the “crazy cycle.”

God Gave Us the World | Lisa Bergren

God Gave Us the World

Written by Lisa T. Bergren

Illustrated by Laura J. Bryant

This delightful children’s story uses a wise mama bear to help her cubs understand- the beautiful world that God has made, full of all types of different bears. They journey across the globe to see bears in different habitats that enjoy different types of foods. The book has a very genuine tone and does not succumb to clichés or cheesiness which many children’s stories do. The mama bear also uses excellent imagery to really drive the important messages home.

The book also ends on a perfect note, using the example of the God being sad when we don’t take care of His earth…just like the brother bear gets frustrated and hurt when his younger twin siblings hurt his toys.

My 8 year old enjoyed the story but would definitely be appropriate for someone as young as preschool aged.

Discussion Questions

Another thing that I love about the publisher’s website, there is a FREE downloadable PDF of questions for the entire series to discuss with your child afterwards. Sometimes parents don’t want to come up with all the thought provoking questions…or maybe you’re a Sunday School teacher, looking for a new lesson. These colorful discussion questions are worth checking out here as well.
